L'insostituibile ruolo dei planetari: riprodurre il cielo stellato

Il giornalista Edward Rothstein del New York Times racconta una visita all'Adler Planetarium di Chicago, dotato di moderni sistemi di proiezione digitale (segnalato dalla mailing list DOME-L). Ciò che lo ha coinvolto emotivamente non sono stati gli spettacoli ricchi di multimedialità ed effetti speciali, ma la Sfera di Atwood, un antenato dei planetari costruito quasi un secolo fa:

But strangely, it is the Atwood Sphere that most moves me.

That is partly because the two shows I saw in the main theaters were uninspired and unfocused, while the Atwood's function is so clear, its ambitions so direct. It has one goal: to reproduce the nighttime sky. And however elementary the results, it is impressive how much effort and energy go into that evocation.

È un'impressione ricorrente, che conferma il ruolo ancora unico, semplice ma profondo dei planetari: fare vivere l'esperienza del cielo stellato.
